||Subcycle Fatigue Crack Growth Formulation under Positive and Negative Stress Ratios

A new fatigue crack growth model at the time scale is proposed for both positive and negative stress ratios. The proposed model includes two components: a time-based crack growth kinetics and crack opening stress formulation for tension-tension and tension-compression loading. The time-based function is proposed based on in-situ SEM testing results. The proposed crack growth function depends on the crack tip opening displacement and the maximum stress intensity factor. A previously developed crack opening stress formulation is modified using a “dual crack contact” concept for both positive and negative stress ratios. The “dual crack contact” separates the local plasticity-induced closure and global crack contact due to compression loading. The developed opening stress formulation is compared with other literature models. The model is validated with test data for various metallic materials under different positive and negative stress ratios. Some discussions and conclusions are drawn based on the proposed model.
