||Wear Mechanism for H13 Steel Tool during Friction Stir Welding of CuCrZr Alloy

Tool wear during friction stir welding (FSW) of high strength materials is an issue, as it changes tool profile and affects weld properties. Understanding the extent of tool wear and its mechanism are important aspects to improve the applicability of FSW for high strength materials. An analysis of wear mechanism for H13 steel tool during FSW of CuCrZr alloy will be presented. Severe wear was observed during welding due to extreme thermo-mechanical environment around the tool. The macroscopic and microscopic investigations of wear mechanism were conducted using various experimental tools such as stereo and optical microscopes, tribometer, surface profilometer, and SEM-EDS. Analysis of the scratch formation on the tool surface and diffusion of Cu in the steel tool surface were used to ascertain the mechanism of abrasive and adhesive wear. The study will be useful for selection of materials for FSW of high strength materials based on the wear mechanism.
