Abstract Scope |
Rare earth doped nanoparticles (RENPs) possess fascinating optical properties due to the multitude of long lived 4f electronic energy states. They can be excited as well as emit light at wavelengths spanning the UV to the near-infrared. Over the last few years advancements in our understanding of the synthetic techniques has allowed for the development of RENPs with architectures that permit for precise and selective doping of the rare earth ions in different components of the architecture. Such controlled doping has resulted in the unprecedented ability to manipulate the optical properties of the RENPs potentially charting a course leading to new applications in diverse fields including theranostics and nanomedicine. Here, we will give an overview of RENPs as well as present a perspective on the role of the nanoarchitecture on their optical properties and subsequently in nanomedicine. |
