| Abstract Scope |
Lightweight magnesium alloys are promising in automotive and aerospace applications because of their excellent strength to weight ratio. Understanding the high strain rate and impact behavior of magnesium alloys and their composites is desired for such applications. The strain rate dependence of mechanical properties of fly ash/AZ91 alloy composites is explored in this work. A split-Hopkinson pressure bar is used for testing the composite at strain rates in the range of 250-650. Strength and energy absorption are determined for composites containing 15 vol% fly ash. The results show that compared to the alloy matrix the energy absorption is higher in fly ash filled composites at comparable strain rates. |
