We describe here the microstructure, mechanical properties, and deformation behavior of Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloy. On the addition of element Y, the Mg-rare earth alloy forms Mg12Zn(Y, Gd) phase with 18R-long period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure. The long period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure in Mg-RE alloys enhances both strength and elongation at ambient and elevated temperature because of the excellent thermal stability and ability of plastic deformation. LPSO phase in the grain boundary ensures strength of the alloy at room and elevated temperature by effectively preventing grain boundary sliding.
