||Microstructure and Phase Transitions under Large Undercooling Conditions

Theoretical ideas and experimental results will be presented for the dynamics of phase and microstructural transitions under large undercooling conditions during solidification and solid-solid phase transitions. Experimental conditions to obtain large undercooling will be discussed first and then several important processes that become important at large undercooling will be quantitatively established. These effects include the sharp reduction in the mobility of atoms, presence of non-equilibrium effects at the interface, development of strain energy effects at the interface and the non-linear equilibrium lines in phase diagrams at high undercooloing values. The theoretical model at large undercooling will be applied to experimental data on solidification in metallic and polymer systems and on solid-solid transformations in Fe-C and Cu-Al systems.
