Abstract Scope |
Solidification processing is generally the first step in the process chain of metals manufacturing. The microstructure and quality of solidification products have profound, if not dominant, effects on the performance on the finished systems. In this talk, solidification microstructures of lightweight aluminum and magnesium alloys were studied using computational thermodynamics and microstructure simulation tools and validated in directional solidification (DS) and high pressure die cast (HPDC) experiments. Quantitative phase constituents of solidification microstructure are predicted using CALculation of PHAse Diagrams (CALPHAD) simulation and validated for aluminum and magnesium alloys. Microsegregation behavior under different cooling rates was simulated using CALPHAD-based micro-models incorporating back diffusion in solid phases. A three-dimensional (3-D) quantitative cellular automaton (CA) model was established for simulating the dendrite growth during solidification process of ternary alloys. The evolution of three dimensional grain structure as well as its effects on location-specific mechanical properties of HPDC castings are discussed. |
