||Solidification of a Mushy Zone in a Static Temperature Gradient: Phase-field Simulations

The solidification of a mushy zone, i.e. the transition of a dendritic mush towards a planar front, in a static temperature gradient G is a quite common phenomenon, e.g. during the preparation of a Bridgman experiment, in a lava lake, or at the bottom of the melt pool in additive manufacturing processes. Here, we report on phase-field simulations of the evolution of a steady state dendritic structure grown under Bridgman conditions (constant G and V) towards a partial equilibrium when switching the pulling velocity V to 0. We show that the dynamics is strongly influenced by the Temperature Gradient Zone Melting (TGZM) process and discuss the evolution for various phase diagrams and process conditions.
