Symposium Phase Transformation Across Multiscale Material Interfaces

Abstract Scope Metallic glass composites have been explored based on the mechanical property improvements they demonstrate compared to monolithic amorphous metals. In this work, we investigate the consequences of roll-bonding of metallic glass/crystalline metals to form multi-laminated bulk materials. It is essential for the rolling to occur in a warm state to enable viscous flow in the metallic glass and sufficient plasticity in the metal phase, however preliminary results point to a nanoscale interfacial region that develops between the two constituents layers. In this talk, we will discuss the processing conditions leading to this formation, postulate the formation mechanisms, probe the chemistry and nature of the interface, and lastly discuss the implications of this layer on hardness and bulk mechanical properties. These results will offer insight into the effects of nanoscale interfacial layers in other metallic glass/amorphous + metal composite materials and morphologies.
