The process of ferrite formation in steels is dynamic by nature and depends strongly from the behaviour and redistribution of both carbon and alloying elements through the transformation interfaces. The analysis of the interaction between elements and interfaces is often difficult for the reason that it occur at the nano-scale and in the vicinity of an interface of few atomic plans thick.
In the present work, by coupling 3D Atom Probe Tomography (ATP) and TEM we propose to provide some clarifications regarding the interfacial contact conditions at moving ferrite/interface in Fe-C-Mn system. From selected experiments in that system, we measure both the kinetics of ferrite formation and the associated C and Mn profile through the α/γ interface as a function of time and temperature. The analysis proposed indisputably shows different mode for ferrite growth that depends strongly on both the nature of interface and the initial conditions.
