||SPG-2: Low Energy Method to Separate Magnetite Generated By Reduction of Bauxite Residue

The alkaline extraction of alumina from Bauxite through the Bayer Process generates a residue called red mud. For every ton of Aluminum produces, 1-1.5 tons of residue is produces which is dumped into the environment. In our study, Jamaican red mud is used which is rich in Hematite (65 % by wt), Al2O3 ( 11 %), TiO2 (7 %). A gas based reduction was performed using a mixture of CO, CO2 and N2. The parameters varied were CO/CO2, Temperature, Time. It was observed that 100 % conversion of Hematite to Magnetite was obtained. Wet and dry magnetic separations were carried out to separate the reduced fraction using Frantz Magnetic Separation and Davis Tube.
