Abstract Scope Magnesium alloys are currently highly researched for use as biodegradable implant applications. The challenge in this field of material development comprises the design of an alloy that provides adequate mechanical and corrosion properties combined with an excellent biocompatibility. Yet there are many approaches in current literature but only one Mg-based application showed the potential to hit the market. MAGNEZIX® Compression Screws are the worlds first approved/CE-certified magnesium-based implants used for biodegradable osteosyntheses applications in humans. Therefore this paper focusses on challenges and current clinical results achieved by means of degradable compression screws. Insight into the screws‘ process chain and approval processes will be given. As these innovative screws are on the market two years already longterm results based on their use in surgery will be discussed.
