Additive Manufacturing (AM) process such as Direct Metal Deposition (DMD) with some modification provides an economical and flexible manufacturing solution for direct writing of single crystal. However, until recently nobody has been successful in direct writing of N5 single crystal of big enough size until the present authors successfully wrote 22.1mm tall N5 Single crystal. Authors developed an in situ Smart Optical Monitoring System (SOMS), which can identify composition, single and poly-crystal, temperature. It can be used to controls the heat input in to the substrate (blade) with an intelligent closed-loop feedback system, with this real time control of heat input into the deposit, the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) is kept to a minimum. It also enables close control of the temperature gradient at the solid/liquid interface needed for single crystal growth. This paper describes the method, and microstructure evolution. It has the potential to build and certify simultaneously.
