Presentation Title Processes and Characterizations of Ceramic Optical Fibers

Abstract Scope Fiber laser gain media are compact, vibration-resistant, and require less cooling. Since Ikesue’s demonstration of a laser using polycrystalline YAG (Yttrium Aluminum Garnet), polycrystalline transparent ceramics have attracted attention because their production cost and technical limitations can be less restrictive than those for single crystals. Polycrystalline YAG fiber fabrication processes and characterization methods are presented and discussed. Various processes for fiber cladding necessary for light guiding in the fiber core and clad pumping are also presented. Processing-microstructure-property relationships of the polycrystalline ceramic fibers will be discussed.
