Abstract Scope |
In this study, high strength aluminum 7075 (Al 7075) alloy, i.e., one of the candidate lightweight materials for transportation applications, was treated by open-air plasma to form oxide-based layer acting as corrosion barrier. Multi-length scale advanced characterization techniques, including optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction, were utilized to study modification of the surface layer morphology and chemistry in the top surface and cross-sectional perspectives. Contact angle measurement was also applied to assess change of surface energy before and after the plasma treatments. Then, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and polarization measurements were performed on untreated and open-air plasma surface treated Al 7075 alloy samples to investigate corrosion resistance. The discussion of results will focus on the effect of surface treatment and corrosion exposure on the bonding integrity. |
