The evolution of microstructure through additive manufacturing and subsequent post-processing is primarily responsible for material performance. As such, understanding the role of specific microstructural features is critical in the effort to design unique alloys for additive. First, characterization of a gamma prime strengthened superalloy in the as-built state will be presented, including details regarding microsegregation, phase identification and texture. Second, the associated heat treatment response of the alloy, including observed grain size variability will be discussed.
