Presentation Title Enhanced Emission at Telecommunication Wavelength from Silicon-Phosphorene Hybrid Device Doped with Erbium

Abstract Scope The rise of phosphorene as a new 2D material that can rival graphene in photonic applications is mainly due to its tunable direct bandgap. Here, we present a design that incorporates erbium and phosphorene into a silica matrix on silicon that is capable of emitting in the 1.54 μm telecommunication band. The design provides a protective technique to the few phosphorene layers that are in direct contact with silicon while allowing the top phosphorene layers to get oxidized from the oxygen rich erbia and silica. Results indicate that this hybrid device, obtained by the facile route of sol-gel chemistry followed by a deposition by spin coating, is a promising technique that paves the way for implementing 2D materials into silicon semiconductor industry. Enhanced photoluminescence data and characterization by high resolution electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) in addition to Raman spectroscopy are used to investigate the quality of the layers involved.
