Hough-based EBSD is very successful in differentiating crystalline phases that have distinct crystal structures. Iron BCC and Magnesium HCP can be differentiated easily. However, Hough-based EBSD has great difficulty in differentiating phases that have: (1) the same Bravais lattice such as Silver and Copper or (2) different Bravais lattices and almost the same lattice parameters such as Ferrite and Martensite in steel. In this paper, we show that the dictionary approach can successfully differentiate phases in these scenarios. We also introduce a confidence metric to evaluate the efficacy of phase differentiation as well as phase differentiation diagrams for binary- and ternary-phase systems. Cases of Copper-Nickel-Silver and Martensite-Ferrite-Austenite systems will be illustrated.
