Due to combining the two materials in composite the strength of the material system is stronger than the strength of the matrix itself. However, in order to further improve modern MMC it is necessary to understand the mechanisms that control the mechanical behaviour, especially the strength and toughness, of the interface between their constituents. Furthermore, interface mechanical properties should be shaped according to the specific requirements. Hence, the aim of this presentation is to show the results of investigation of the influence of technological parameters of sintering of copper matrix – ceramic (SiC and Al2O3) reinforced composites on the mechanical properties and microstructure of the interface between metal matrix and ceramic reinforcement. The parameters that have been taken into consideration are: sintering temperature, pressure, time, reinforcements roughness and coating of the reinforcements. Furthermore, the influence of protective coatings (tungsten, chromium, titanium) deposited on ceramic has been studied.
