Abstract Scope Shear deformation is an important consideration in a number of engineering applications for which a material is subject to high rates of deformation. Localization of plastic flow under shear conditions can lead to catastrophic failure of a material. Additively manufactured metals, which may in some cases replace metals produced by more conventional means such as wrought processing, must exhibit adequate deformation properties to be considered viable in many structural applications. In this study, the shear deformation properties of additively manufactured 316L stainless steel were examined through Hopkinson Bar deformation at strain rates between 1500/s and 3500/s. A “tophat” or forced shear geometry was employed to study the evolution of the shear localization process in these materials. The microstructure was examined post mortem and compared with that of wrought 316L deformed under the same conditions.
