Abstract Scope |
Magnesium alloys are promising materials for the transportation industry, for 3C industries and gained interest as a degradable implant material. Like for other metals and alloys, melting and casting are the first steps in producing feedstock materials or products. However, often casting is not as simple as it appears. Melt and mould temperature, geometry of mould, solidification rate, composition, freezing range, formation of intermetallic phases, burn-off and pick-up are influencing the final result. Especially magnesium alloys are also prone to oxidation and need special care with respect to melt protection. This contribution will address important issues regarding the castability of magnesium alloys and its melt protection. |
