For a long time, magnesium has been researched for use as biodegradable implant to overcome the disadvantages of polymer-based biodegradable implants. Adequately processed magnesium alloys possess superior mechanical and corrosion properties combined with an excellent biocompatibility allowing the establishment of a new class of implants.
Syntellix gathered extensive market experience wirh magnesium-based implants in several countries since their initial approval in the European Community in 2013. Now, four years after the first implantation of a magnesium implant in daily clinical business, more than 30.000 devices out of a progressively growing product portfolio have been sold.
This review paper will report on the market experiences and challenges and the progress in product development with this innovative technology. An overview of the current market feedback situation will be provided to attest the safe and reliable applicability of magnesium-based implants.
