A set of CoCrFeNiX high-entropy alloys (HEAs) were prepared by alloying one element to CoCrFeNi. Based on these alloys, new insights into the phase selection in HEAs are obtained. We find that existing phase formation theories often fail to explain the behavior of the CoCrFeNiX alloys. Two reasons are proposed. The first can be solved by improving the alloy database; the other is intrinsic to the concept behind existing theories and can not be solved. The latter leads to failure in predicting the existence of certain intermetallic types. Moreover, we find that atomic size difference is the key factor to the selection of phase type. These findings shed new light on the phase selection behavior in HEAs, and will facilitate the design and development of these novel materials.
