Abstract Scope Yttria-containing zirconia polycrstalline (Y-TZP) ceramics has been established in restorative dentistry as material of choice for tooth-colored, all-ceramic systems. It`s success is based on 3Y-TZP due to stress-induced, transformation toughening (t-m) mechanism. 3Y-TZP is metastable and prone to low-temperature degradation (LTD). Highly-translucent and LTD-resistant grades were launched to comply with the full-contour monolithic paradigm. The increase in yttria content restrained the t-m degrading the mechanical superiority. The paper will present the diverse phase-microstructure-property relationships of the Y-TZPs during the in vitro and in vivo performance, determining suitable processing methods and laboratory procedures, such as airborne-particle abrasion and regeneration firing. Finally, the prospects and challenges of entering the field of additive manufacturing workflow for dental zirconia will be discussed with the ultimate goal of enabling the fabrication of custom-made prosthetic options with suitable aesthetics and structural (strength, toughness) properties.
