||TEM Studies of the Evolution of Dislocation Configurations under Cyclic Loading in Al Alloys

The relationship between the cyclic deformation behavior and dislocation structure is important to understand the growth of a crack. We have investigated the crack tip dislocations of Aluminum alloys under cyclic loading using transmission electron microscopy at different crack lengths corresponding to different stress intensity (ΔK). TEM observations showed the formation of sub-grains as well as high density of dislocation network structures within the plastic zone. The dislocation networks were analyzed to obtain a 3D representation of dislocation network structure on the basis of TEM observations. We will present dislocation network evolution and its correlation with deformation behavior. We will also discuss the effect of aggressive environment on the structure and configurations of dislocations under cyclic loading.
