Abstract Scope The group IVB transition metal carbides and nitrides are a class of refractory materials whose microstructure can be regulated through chemistry. There has been renewed interest in this problem because high volume fractions of the zeta phase in the tantalum carbides as shown exceptional fracture toughness. In this talk we examine the phase stability of the zeta phase in three materials systems: the tantalum carbides, hafnium nitrides and titanium nitrides. Utilizing modern computational tools, we examine the relative phase stability and precipitation pathways of the zeta phase and compare this with the microstructures obtained experimentally. Specifically, we focus on how temperature and pressure, and hence processing conditions, alter the phase stability. This helps explain why, depending on numerous factors, one can obtain large grain microstructures, thin lath-based microstructures, or an absence of the zeta phase entirely.
