We report the initial results of Precipitate free zone (PFZ) of γ’’ around (Nb, Ti)C in nickel based alloy 725, which is related to the sink strength of second phase particles. Unlike the established PFZ around GB, the PFZs around particles show a strong dependence on the orientation of the precipitate variants. In addition to the vacancy or solute atom depletion mechanisms of PFZ, the local stress can influence the shape of PFZ. Microstructure characterization and finite element simulation are performed to correlate the local stress and shape of PFZ. Tensile stress will enhance precipitation, and compressive stress will inhibit precipitate. This observation indicates that the internal stresses can significantly influence precipitate behavior. The result can be important due to the potential influence on mechanical performance such as crack initiation around inclusions.
