High frequency power transformation topologies and approaches are emerging as a technological solution for higher power density and increased functionality of power electronics converters. Relevant applications include solid state transformers, grid-tied power electronics converters, and motor drives amongst others. A range of soft magnetic materials exist for application in high frequency power conversion topologies, but comparisons and benchmarking of existing options is highly dependent upon the specific power conversion topology and excitation waveforms. In addition, manufacturing processes including core level processing and engineering strategies can have a significant impact on core performance. A need exists for independent benchmarking of relevant core materials under application relevant excitation conditions. Initial efforts targeted at this need as well as relevant experimental results and integration into component level simulation models will be presented.
