||LL-63: Confocal Microscopy Studies on Oxide Inclusions in Ca Treated Steels

Steel cleanliness is an important topic and there is a great demand for improvement in cleanliness of steel to avoid nozzle clogging as well as to improve final properties of steels. One way of achieving this is by treating liquid steel with calcium (Ca) injection. Ca treatment modifies the shape and size of inclusions which results in improvement of final properties of steels. Understanding as well as quantification of average size, size distribution and morphology of these inclusions in three dimensions is essential to understand the mechanism of Ca modification of inclusion morphology in the bulk product. X-ray computed tomography (XCT) was used for three dimensional visualisation of inclusions in with and without calcium treated steels. Further, using XCT results, quantified parameters such inclusion average size, size distribution and volume fraction were determined. XCT results were supported with optical microscopy and SEM analysis. These results will be presented and discussed.
