Abstract Scope This manuscript details Part 1 (temperature prediction) in a set of two companion papers that outline a computationally efficient model to orient parts, estimate thermal histories, and predict part distortion during a standard direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) additive manufacturing process. Part distortion due to accumulated thermal stresses in the layer-by-layer building process of DMLS additive manufacturing may prevent parts from meeting specifications and may even cause failure of the whole building process. In this Part 1, we describe our temperature prediction model. In comparison to current FEM-based thermal models, our thermal circuit network (TCN) model can predict the temperature history with two orders of magnitude faster simulation speed and only sacrificing less than a 10% decrease in accuracy. The improved computational speed enables temperature history prediction information to be integrated in to parametric studies or recursive optimization routines to produce DMLS processes that minimize part distortion.
