||An Energy Efficient Thermochemical Process for Production of Ti Metal Powder

The investigation on titanium metal production has been a focus of the research community around the world for several decades. The strong affinity of titanium to oxygen makes the conventional Ti metal production technology energy-intensive. Based on our previous research, a new approach is designed to prepare high-purity Ti metal powder from upgraded titanium slag (UGS). The new approach uses UGS as the raw material to produce purified TiO2 by a hydrometallurgical method instead of the oxidation of TiCl4. Pure TiO2 is subjected to Mg reduction, followed by a de-oxygenation process using Ca. It is confirmed that the approach of producing purified TiO2 first followed by a reduction and de-oxygenation process can achieve both high purity and low oxygen in final Ti metal powder. The purity of Ti, or the impurity content of the powder produced using this process, meets the specifications by ASTM for Ti sponge.
