||Fabrication of Super Al and Mg Powders with Self-dispersed Nanoparticles

Lightweight metals (such as Al and Mg) matrix nanocomposites offer promising mechanical properties desirable to improve energy efficiency and system performance for widespread applications in aerospace, automotive, and defense. However, the incorporation of a high volume fraction nanoparticles into metal matrix is challenging. Here we show that super Al and Mg micro powders with a high volume fraction of TiB2 and TiC nanoparticles were successfully fabricated. Through a flux-assisted solidification processing method, up to 30 volume percent of the nanoparticles were effectively self-incorporated and dispersed into Al and Mg micro droplets before their solidification. The nanocomposite Al and Mg powders can find a broad applications, such as additive manufacturing and thermal spraying coating processes.
