Experimental validation of polycrystalline models can be very challenging. While the macroscopic response is easy to obtain experimentally it is very difficult to gauge whether models truly capture the local deformation field. Deformation in polycrystalline metals is multiscale and can be inherently difficult to accurately capture using such techniques as Digital Image Correlation (DIC). Here we present a demonstration that DIC is capable of recovering strains with sufficient accuracy to validate and challenge models. Limitations are discussed such as patterns, some aspects of imaging/optics and DIC algorithms.
