||Asymmetric Diffusion Behaviour of Al in hcp Mg: Mg Single Crystal Diffusion Couple Experiment

Diffusion couple experiment was performed by both Mg single crystal and polycrystalline (random orientation) Mg with Al to investigate the directional diffusion coefficient of Al in the c-axis and a-axis of Mg. Al concentration profiles of the diffusion couple samples were measured by both electron microprobe (EPMA) by WDS and scanning transmission electron microscope(STEM) with EDX. It was found that Al follows the same diffusion trend in HCP Mg like other elements; i.e. Al diffusion coefficient in hcp Mg perpendicular to c-axis is higher than that along c-axis. Inter-diffusion coefficients of important intermetallics in Mg-Al binary system were also calculated from the diffusion couple experiment.
