Abstract Scope Hydrogen sintering and phase transformation (HSPT) is a new, low-cost, blended elemental (BE), press and sinter process. During HSPT, hydrogenated titanium powder is blended with alloying elements, sintered under a dynamically controlled H<sub>2</sub> partial pressure, and subsequently dehydrogenated under inert gas or vacuum. HSPT utilizes phase transformations in the Ti-H alloy systems, enabling the production of an ultrafine grain microstructure in the as-sintered state. Additionally, the as-sintered microstructure may be further evolved via simple heat treatments to produce a range of wrought-like microstructures without resorting to energy-intensive thermomechanical processing compulsory to traditional processing routes. Therefore, this low-cost process is capable of engineering the microstructure to produce a range of application-tailored mechanical properties that are competitive or superior to wrought alloys. The various microstructures produced via HSPT and the resulting static strength, ductility, and fatigue performance will be discussed and compared with traditional processes such as vacuum sintering and wrought processing.
