Abstract Scope The NIST Materials Data Curation System (MDCS) provides a means for capturing, sharing, and transforming materials data into a structured format that is amenable to transformation to other formats. Numerous challenges impede the ability of the MDCS to keep up (or catch up) with the vast complexity, variety, and quantity of materials data currently being generated (or stored offline). We present a concrete demonstration addressing these issues. For the problems of complexity and variety, we discuss and demonstrate the development of modular data models and metadata standards. For the problem of quantity, we discuss and demonstrate automated capture through integration with experimental measurement apparatus (x-ray diffraction) and simulation software (molecular dynamics). We hope that this talk will motivate multi-institutional collaboration, with the goal of further development of modular data models and automated capture tools that are easy to use and have multidisciplinary applicability.
