Abstract Scope Nanostructured steels are obtained by two different techniques of severe plastic deformation: (i) by ball milling of iron and graphite powders leading to nanocrystalline samples with ferrite grains and grain boundaries saturated with carbon and (II) by wire drawing of pearlitic steels leading to thin cementite and ferrite layers oriented parallel to the wire axis. The atom probe reveals that the ferrite is supersaturated with carbon and the formation of cementite is suppressed or it is decomposed, respectively due to carbon/defect-interaction. Relevant defects are vacancies, dislocations and grain boundaries and their interaction with carbon is described within the defactant concept. Carbon enables very high defect densities with high hardness and flow stresses of the wires of up to 7 GPa. Vacancies stabilized by carbon atoms give rise to an enhanced diffusion of nickel into the ferrite phase.
