Abstract Scope |
This paper studies the effect of Irvingia gabonensis leaf-extract admixture on the corrosion of steel-reinforcement in concrete immersed in 0.5 M H2SO4 medium for simulating industrial/microbial environment. Electrochemical measurements of corrosion-potential and corrosion-rate were obtained from the test-solution immersed steel-reinforced concrete samples having different concentrations of the natural plant extract as admixture in the concretes. Statistically analysed results showed that both of these non-destructive electrochemical tests exhibited agreements in the indication of “high” steel-rebar corrosion-criteria in the control samples, having no admixture, and of “uncertain/low” corrosion criteria in the steel-reinforced concretes having Irvingia gabonensis leaf-extract admixture. Inhibition efficiency performance by the Irvingia gabonensis leaf-extract admixture, on concrete steel-reinforcement corrosion, ranged from η = 89.89%, by the 1.67 g/L, up to 99.34%, by the 5.00 g/L Irvingia gabonensis leaf-extract concentrations. These support suitability of this green, natural plant resource for corrosion-protection of reinforcing steel in concrete designed for the industrial/microbial service-environment. |
