In-situ metrology is vital to laser-based additive manufacturing processes due to rapid cooling and unique physical phenomena that occur within the melt pool. Challenges in laser-based processes include residual stresses and high thermal gradients that lead to volume change and undesirable phase transformations. This talk will discuss in-situ monitoring that captures the solidification front of the melt pool in several powder-deposition based systems that include thermal tracking using a IR camera and a melt pool pyrometer and high-speed imaging using X-ray diffraction for phase contrast and solidification lines. These methods will help with texture and process control of powder-deposition based additive processes for optimal mechanical behavior and material properties.
