Abstract Scope |
The present work is an attempt to stabilize the W-free Co-base superalloys, exhibiting the microstructure of γ (FCC) matrix - γ' (L12) precipitates through alloying additions. The lower density, ease of homogenization and superior oxidation resistance of the W-free Co-base superalloys make them an interesting class of alloys for aero-engine applications. The role of Ti on the γ' solvus temperature, density, evolution and stability of microstructure, and consequent mechanical properties was investigated systematically. Further, the influence of Ti addition on the lattice misfit, elemental partitioning behaviour and precipitate coarsening kinetics was studied. The mechanical behaviour of the alloys was attributed to a complex interplay between various factors affecting the Anti Phase Boundary energy, morphology, the precipitate size, lattice misfit, precipitate volume fraction and coarsening behaviour. Finally, the evolution of the γ’ precipitate morphology and grain boundary character due to prolonged exposure to high temperature (> 0.6 Tm) were considered briefly. |
