Presentation Title Synergistic Effects in Multi-Ion Irradiated Nano-Oxide Dispersed Ferritic Alloys

Abstract Scope Structures of nanoparticles/clusters in nano-oxide dispersed ferritic alloys fabricated by mechanical alloying and the role of nanoparticles/clusters in radiation damage of the alloys under multi-ion irradiations have been investigated using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) techniques. The observations of partially crystallized complex-oxide nanoparticles/clusters reveal that the nanoparticles/clusters in as-fabricated alloys are not only structurally defective but also chemically deviate from equilibrium. Results of (Fe + He) dual-ion and (Fe + He + H) triple-ion irradiation experiments indicate that the nanoparticles/clusters play a crucial role in enhancing radiation resistance of nano-oxide dispersed ferritic alloys with respect to helium management of the attainable helium atoms for each cavity to below critical quantity for the occurrence of bubble-to-void conversion. The adverse effect of hydrogen implementation on the triple-ion irradiated alloys was observed through the formation of HFe5O8-base hydroxide compound in association with large facetted voids.
