Abstract Scope Two-phase gamma (FCC)-gamma’ (L12) alloys based on the Co-W-Al ternary system exhibit promising high temperature strength and creep resistance; and could potentially operate at higher temperatures compared to their Ni-based analogs presently used in turbine blade and other high temperature applications. Unfortunately, the understanding of the thermodynamics and kinetics of ternary Co-W-Al is incomplete. In this work, microstructure and phase evolution is investigated for several rapidly quenched Co-W-Al alloys at temperatures between 800 C and 1100 C from the as-quenched state to annealing times up to 4000 hr. Phase equilibria, including the stability of the L12 phase in the ternary system, are discussed in detail and isothermal sections of the Co-rich portion of phase diagram are presented for several temperatures. The new data are incorporated in an updated CALPHAD description of the Co-W-Al system.
