||Mechanical Properties of Micro-sized Metallic Glass Spheres

Metallic glass(MG) spheres with diameters of several micrometers to one hundred micrometers were prepared by gas atomization. The compression tests of these micro-scaled MG spheres were conducted on a Nano indenter instrument equipped a flat punch. It was found that the smaller spheres exhibited higher yield strength and better plastic deformation ability. Addtitional, the spheres were annealed to eliminate the free volume. A much more distinct trend of “the smaller, the stronger” than that of the as-prepared spheres was found. After annealed, the spheres performed worse plastic deformation abilities and turned to be more brittle.
The different plastic deformation ability of spheres with different sizes were further discussed with Griffith energy balance criterion. And an explanation was given for the different strength trends of the as-prepared and the as annealed spheres via the free volume theory.
