Presentation Title Scandium-enriched Nano-precipitates in Aluminum Provide Enhanced Coarsening and Creep Resistance

Abstract Scope We provide an overview of 18 years of our research on dilute Al-Sc based alloys which exhibit, upon aging, coherent Al3Sc(L12) nano-precipitates. We describe ternary and quaternary alloying additions, such as: (i) other transition metals (e.g., Zr, Ti, Hf with small diffusivities), which provide coarsening resistance; (ii) lanthanides (e.g., Er and Yb), which increase the mismatch between precipitates and matrix and thus increase creep resistance; (iii) elements with high solubility in aluminum (e.g., Zn, Mg and Li), which provide solid-solution strengthening; and (iv) metalloids (e.g., Si and Ge), which act as inoculant for nano-precipitates. We focus on the chemical compositions of the nano-precipitates via atom-probe tomography (e.g., core-shell structures) and the resulting creep resistance, due to interactions between matrix dislocations and the coherent nano-precipitates.
