The surface modification of orthopedic implants by LASER presents a promising technique as an attempt to improve osseointegration. Compared to conventional technique the femtosecond LASER induces reduced mechanical and thermal damage. Therefore, this study aimed at to evaluate the influence of surface modification by femtosecond LASER on the SxN curves of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. It was observed a significant reduction in fatigue strength of the specimens modified by LASER in comparison with “as received” surfaces, which, probably, was caused by notch effects in the scale of 5-10um, which can increase Kf significantly, and metallurgical modification of the surface as the modification was carried out under normal atmosphere.
