||Structural Stability of Ultra-fine Grained Metastable Beta Titanium Alloys

Two type of metastable beta titanium alloys, Ti-15Mo and Ti-4.5Fe-6.8Mo-1.5Al (TIMETAL LCB) were subjected to severe plastic deformation (SPD) methods to achieve ultra-fine grained (UFG) microstructure. Using SPD processes improvement of mechanical and physical properties was observed, moreover the UFG structure significantly affects the phase transformations occurring in metastable β-Ti alloys upon annealing to elevated temperatures. ω-phase formation is suppressed and precipitation of the α-phase is accelerated. Differences upon annealing caused by different chemical composition of alloys and different induced deformation is also discussed. The extensive investigation includes both ex-situ and in-situ experimental methods.
