||Measurement of 3D Tortuosity of Anode Porosity by Micro X-ray Computed Tomography

A series of samples taken from both full-scale industrial and pilot prebaked anodes was analysed by micro X-ray computed tomography. The shortest path length through connected pores ascending from one side of the volume was calculated, giving a measurement of the pores' tortuosity. Large differences in the pores' tortuosity were observed for the measured samples. The results are compared to the gas permeability. The same model was also applied to the carbon, providing a tortuosity of the solid phase, which is compared to the electrical conductivity. The difference is smaller, but still significant for the measured samples.
