||Effects of Solidification Conditions on Microstructure and Properties of the CoCrFeMnNi Family of HEAs

Microstructure and behavior of four alloys were analyzed: Cantor alloy, non-equiatomic “A3S” (Co20Cr15Fe26Mn17Ni22), “pure” or alloyed (100 ppm C and 0.4 % Nb). Alloys were cast by cold-crucible method starting from high purity raw materials. The so-obtained ingots were molten and rapidly solidified by melt spinning at three cooling rates. Alloys were investigated in as-cast or in heat treated states. Independently of solidification conditions, all the alloys show a perfect FCC structure; no amorphous phase has been detected. Lattice parameter depends slightly on alloy’s composition: it decreases for A3S vs Cantor alloy while the presence of Nb increases its value, confirming presence of alloying element in the FCC matrix. An increase of hardness in annealed (500°C) Nb-containing alloys has been measured suggesting precipitation on Nb-riche phases. This work confirms the feasibility of preparation of crystalline HEAs by rapid solidification methods.
