Abstract Scope Henry Clifton Sorby is the father of metallography. He brilliantly used microscopy to study the microstructure of a wide range of materials, from metals to minerals. This talk will demonstrate how the research of my group using electron microscopy and atom probe tomography has solved some fascinating key microstructural problems with gallium nitride based LEDs and electronic devices which may enable us to save 25% of electricity, 25% of carbon emissions, purify water saving millions of lives, create jobs, and improve the health of us all.
