Abstract Scope |
The present work aims to convert granulated blast fumace slag into a ceramic material by the geopolymerization process. An alkaline solution composed of Na2SiO3 and NaOH, and the granulated residue as binding material, were used in the syntheses. The molar ratio SiO2/Al2O3 used in the blend was based on the values determined by Davidovits. Test specimens were produced by the molding and pressing process. The maturing period was 7 and 14 days at room temperature, 60 and 80 degrees Celsius. The results of flexural strength and compression showed that maturing period, to both at room temperature and at controlled temperature influenced the properties of the geopolymers studied in this Work. The longer maturing period causes a better the mechanical characteristics of the geopolymerized ceramic pieces are identified. Finally, it was observed that this residue can be used as an alternative in the production of geopolymeric materials applied in civil construction. |
